As a result of childbirth, trauma, or other causes, women often experience changes to the tightness of their vagina. General looseness or a loss of friction can lead to several challenges, from bladder leakage to problems with intercourse or inability to retain tampons. Rather than writing these changes off as unavoidable and permanent concerns, women can significantly improve their quality of life through surgical vaginal rejuvenation (surgical tightening).
Surgical vaginal rejuvenation is a common procedure that restores the vagina to a more youthful state. Esprit Cosmetic Surgeons provides both surgical and non-surgical approaches to treatment, but the former is a permanent solution that can give patients greater tightness and control.
Thinking About Surgical Tightening?
Women who have experienced dramatic changes in the function and responsiveness of their vagina are good candidates for surgical vaginal rejuvenation. Some of the most common reasons that they schedule a visit with Esprit Cosmetic Surgeons are to address:
- Vaginal looseness or loss of friction.
- Sexual dysfunction.
- Bladder leakage.
- Trouble with bowel movements.
Surgery improves control, enhances the aesthetics of the genitals, and gives a tighter feel to the opening of the vagina. It can be especially effective for women who want more sensation for themselves and their sexual partner at the entry point of intercourse.
Dr. Nancy Salisbury guides patients in their treatment and performs female genital cosmetic surgery for the practice. She is a board-certified surgeon who has focused her career on helping women look and feel the way that they choose for themselves. Her 30 years of gynecological and surgical experience includes intensive training with renowned Dr. David Matlock (TV’s “Dr. 90210”) and certification with the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute® (LVRI®) of America.
Your Experience with Esprit Cosmetic Surgeons
During an initial visit with Dr. Salisbury, patients will have the opportunity to discuss the goals they want to achieve with treatment. Many women find the consultation to be a great opportunity to learn more about their body and about features of their vagina that may have changed over time.
Looseness just below the bladder, over the rectum, or in the “doorway” area can each cause different symptoms, and so Dr. Salisbury will typically use a mirror to demonstrate to patients the sites that can benefit from treatment. She will also recommend whether patients should consider surgical tightening or a non-surgical approach.
Women who have surgical vaginal rejuvenation typically receive general anesthesia so that they can sleep comfortably through the procedure, which takes 1-2 hours. Patients often opt to combine surgical tightening with related procedures, such as labiaplasty and perineoplasty, which can lengthen the surgical time.
Dr. Salisbury recommends that patients stay on bed rest and take off work for about two weeks. Women who have surgical vaginal tightening will usually go home with a catheter to help with bladder drainage. Esprit Cosmetic Surgeons will remove the catheter after two days, and patients will return to the practice again at two weeks and at six weeks to ensure that they are healing as expected. Patients should take 6-8 weeks of pelvic rest and not have sexual intercourse during this time.
What Patients Ask Us About Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Is recovering from the procedure painful?
Surprisingly, Dr. Salisbury’s patients tend to report that healing is very manageable. Surgeries inside of the vagina tend to be much more comfortable for recovery than external procedures, and most discomfort is gone after the first week or two.
Will the procedure offer the right amount of tightness?
Careful consultation with Dr. Salisbury helps ensure that the results of surgical tightening match with each patient’s goals. Dr. Salisbury leverages her years of experience in performing the procedure to restore vaginal tightness to a normal, younger state.
Will having kids after the surgery affect my results?
Patients who have vaginal tightening surgery and then have a vaginal delivery may affect their results. In part, this is because vaginal childbirth can alter a woman’s internal anatomy. A C-section delivery should not affect the results.
Is the change I will get from surgical tightening permanent?
The approach that Dr. Salisbury uses for surgical vaginal rejuvenation corrects the fascia and brings together the connective tissue of the vagina. These are permanent changes, and women who have the procedure and who follow post-operative instructions should be able to enjoy its benefits for years to come.
Will having the surgery improve my sexual experience?
Surgical vaginal rejuvenation has the ability to enhance the sexual experience for both the patient and her sexual partner. Both should notice a difference in sensation during intercourse.
