Breast lifts (mastopexy) are one of the most frequently performed plastic surgical procedures in the United States. A breast lift enhances your figure by lifting the breasts into a higher, more youthful position. These procedures are ideal for women who have seen a change in their breasts after pregnancy, weight loss, and/or aging.

The One-Stage Approach

Often a breast lift and augmentation with implants can be performed during a single operation. This is best done on breasts that only have mild skin excess and sag, and in women selecting small to moderate size implants.

A breast lift is a single surgical procedure in which excess loose skin is removed, and the breasts shaped and tightened. The main changes with a mastopexy are elevating the position of the areolas and tightening the lower half of the breast. These maneuvers create perky, tight, tear-drop shaped breast. During breast augmentation, implants are used to add volume to the breasts. Many of our patients choose the single-stage approach and they are pleased with their results.

The Two-Stage Approach

It is often best to perform the mastopexy and implant augmentation as two separate operations. The breast lift is performed first- perfecting the shape and position of the breasts. Then, three to six months lateral breast augmentation with implants can be done. This two-stage approach is a very safe and effective way to give women the breasts they desire. Also, it allows the patient to be a more active participant in selecting the implant, as after the mastopexy is healed it’s much easier for the patient to decide the exact size implants they want.

Which Procedure Is Right for Me?

If you are considering breast enhancement, you may be wondering which procedure is right for you. Women who want to lift their breasts upwards and achieve a more youthful shape can see impressive results with a simple breast lift.

Those who are concerned with their breast size and shape, but not their position, may only need a breast augmentation.

Women who want a complete transformation of their breasts may need a breast lift with augmentation. These patients often have the following aesthetic concerns:

  • Decreased breast size after pregnancy
  • Poor skin elasticity
  • Advanced sagging
  • Downward position of the areolas
