Female model for neuromodulators and dermal fillers esprit® cosmetic surgeonsAs you begin to see the signs of aging on your face, you may want to slow down their progression or reverse the effects altogether. Neuromodulators and dermal fillers reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that develop over time. Neuromodulators and dermal fillers also both provide temporary results, so patients who love their rejuvenated skin need to refresh their treatments regularly. However, in spite of these similarities, the two forms of injectables work differently.

Neuromodulators weaken the muscle contractions that form and deepen wrinkles, while dermal fillers support and plump the skin to smooth wrinkles. The different methodologies allow our team at Esprit Cosmetic Surgeons in Portland, Oregon, to customize your treatment based on your needs.

BOTOX®

BOTOX® is a neuromodulator that blocks the chemical signals in targeted nerves to stop muscle contractions. Neuromodulators like BOTOX soften lines and wrinkles by ceasing muscle movement that causes them and preventing new lines from forming.

In most patients, BOTOX injections last three to four months. We advise our patients to schedule their BOTOX injections 12 to 16 weeks apart, depending on when they see their results begin to recede.

Dysport®

Dysport® is another neuromodulator that treats dynamic wrinkles or lines that form from facial expressions. Since Dysport injections are less concentrated than BOTOX, they spread more easily, and patients often see their best results from Dysport treatments on larger areas like the forehead.

Dysport injections reduce wrinkles quickly, sometimes within two to three days of the injections. The benefits of Dysport consistently last around three to four months, and patients should schedule their follow-up treatments accordingly.

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm® is a dermal filler line that plumps the skin, smoothing wrinkles and providing more structure to underlying tissue. Each filler in the Juvéderm line aims to treat different areas with precise results.

On average, Juvéderm results last about 18 months. However, that duration may change based on the treatment area. Patients at Esprit Cosmetic Surgeons typically schedule their Juvéderm treatments about 12 months apart for consistent, long-lasting results.

Restylane®

Restylane® is another line of dermal fillers whose results vary in duration based on the treatment area. For example, patients who have Restylane injections to their nasolabial folds can expect their results to last up to 18 months, while cheek treatments may last 12 months.

Restylane filler in the lips, the backs of the hands, or facial wrinkles and folds typically needs a refresh every six months. In areas where the skin is thinner or less durable, patients can expect their results to last three months. In areas where movement is limited, they may find their treatments last up to six months.
